How we can support you…

Long term conditions

If you’re living with a long-term health condition, physical activity can play an important role in managing symptoms or getting on the road to recovery.

Our team is trained with the knowledge to support and advise you throughout your wellness journey. We can work with you to set personalised goals based on your circumstances and help you discover a range of enjoyable activities to get you more active and support your health.

We also have a number of classes and programmes specifically designed for people living with or recovering from conditions such as cancer, chronic pain, heart or lung health issues, or stroke.

Cancer

We offer specialist classes at venues across the borough, providing a safe and comfortable environment for you to be more active.

We can also arrange for health care specialists to drop into our sessions, so they can answer any questions you may have about your treatment and symptoms.

Breast cancer

We take a holistic approach to support you before, during and after breast cancer surgery.

Working closely with breast cancer nurses and other colleagues at WWL NHS Foundation Trust, we provide support with your rehabilitation exercises and guidance on increasing physical activity post-surgery. This support will be discussed during your pre-op assessment with the cancer specialist nurses.

Cardiac rehabilitation

We work closely with clinical partners to provide cardiac rehabilitation programmes for people who have undergone heart surgery, had a heart attack or other cardiac event, or been diagnosed with a condition such as heart failure.

Our specialist team will build a personalised exercise and support programme built to your specific circumstances and needs, with the aim of helping you get back to enjoying as full and active life as possible.

Pulmonary rehabilitation

We work with WWL NHS Foundation Trust’s pulmonary team to deliver rehabilitation programmes at Robin Park Leisure Centre and Leigh Leisure Centre.

These eight-week programmes, consisting of two classes per week, include exercises designed specifically for people with long-term lung conditions, as well as advice on managing your condition and looking after your body and lungs, and techniques to manage breathlessness.

Pain management

Depending on your circumstances, we have a number of options – from pain management classes that rotate weekly through circuit, yoga and core ball stability exercises; to back care classes and pool-based aqua mobility sessions.

Meanwhile, ESCAPE-pain is a six-week, evidence-based group rehabilitation programme for people with chronic joint pain. Delivered over 12 sessions, it combines a progressive exercise circuit with an educational component – with the aim of reducing pain in your joints and increasing mobility and function.

Stroke rehabilitation

Stroke rehabilitation is designed for stroke survivors. It can help you to regain mobility, improve balance, regain muscle mass, and reduce stress. You can take part in the class at your own pace, with exercises tailored so you get the best out of them.

Other activities that may be suitable include confidence walks, strength and balance classes, and wellness walking football sessions.

For those experiencing issues with mobility, we also have specialist strength and balance sessions as well as resources to help you stay active at home.

Group strength and balance

These evidence-based sessions are designed to help you improve your mobility, balance, strength, coordination and confidence to get out and about.

Classes last approx. 1 hour and are available at leisure centres and community venues across the borough. Classes are part-seated and part-standing. If you have any pre-existing health conditions, you may need to speak to your GP or Practice Nurse first.
