5 things to know
about group ex

Mike was once nervous about joining in with group exercise – but now he teaches his own Les Mills classes as a qualified Be Well instructor! Here are five things he’s learned if you’re feeling unsure about taking the plunge…

“Everyone will be extremely fit… Everyone will be judging me… I don’t think I’ll be able to do it.”

Sound familiar? Deciding to sign up for a group exercise class can feel daunting. If you’ve ever stared at the ‘book’ button and hesitated, you’re not alone. For many, the hardest part is simply showing up.

I used to be one of those people – nervous about stepping into a gym, unsure about joining a class. Fast forward a few years, and I’m now a qualified gym instructor, delivering Les Mills GRIT and other sessions at our Be Well centres!

Along the way I’ve made friends, and met inspiring people of all shapes, sizes, abilities and goals. Here are five simple things I’ve learned – both from my own journey and from the members I work with:

1. Nobody cares (in the best way possible)

When you walk into a class for the first time, it’s easy to think everyone’s watching or judging you. The truth? They’re not. Trust me… everyone’s too focused on their own fitness journey. I know because I’ve been there. You’re concentrating so much on what you’re doing yourself that you really don’t pay much attention to those around you.

Most people are just glad you’re there, and many will be happy to support you if you do feel you need a little help. Remember: they were ‘newbies’ once too.

2. There’s always an option that works for you

Group classes are designed to be inclusive. Whether you’re dealing with an injury, building confidence or just starting out, instructors are there to offer adaptations and alternatives.

We instructors are a friendly bunch, so if you’ve any issues or questions, or you have any limitations from an injury or condition, then just come grab us and let us know. We’ll be able to show you how you can adapt the workout to a level that suits where you’re at.

3. Bring a friend… it helps!

Everything’s easier (and more fun) with a mate. Signing up for a group ex class with a friend turns it into a shared adventure – and makes you more likely to stick with it. You’ll be there to motivate each other and keep each other accountable, and the chance to catch up will be another good reason to get out of the house and get moving.

You’ll quickly notice familiar faces in classes too, which helps build a real sense of community. So even if you don’t have a friend to go with the first time, the odds are you’ll have made a new one at the class soon enough!

4. Arrive early

Here’s a simple tip… Try to get there 10-15 minutes before the class starts. It gives you time to get set up, chat with the instructor about any concerns or injuries, and settle in. You’ll feel more relaxed and ready to go when the session begins.

5. There’s a class for everyone

I truly believe this. Be Well offers a wide variety of classes and, if you want my advice, the best idea is to try a few and see what suits you best. If one doesn’t click, that’s okay. It doesn’t mean group exercise isn’t for you… just that particular class. Keep exploring until you find the one that makes you feel good.

Whatever class you choose, group exercise isn’t about being the fittest or the fastest. It’s about showing up, moving your body, and connecting with others.

So, if you’ve been thinking about it, go on… don’t be shy! Press that ‘book’ button. You might just love it.
