Supporting you
after a stroke

Finding what works

After a stroke, starting to move more can provide a massive boost to your recovery, your confidence and your wellbeing, and can help you to stay healthy.

It’s important to start slowly and build from there, and over time you can begin to add more movement into your daily life – whether at home, at work, or on the go.

Everybody is different, and it’s about discovering what works for you.

It’s not just about physical fitness but your mental health too, so do something you love that makes you feel good. After all, if it’s an activity you enjoy, you’ll be much more likely to keep going with it and make it part of your routine.

Ways we can help…

Stroke rehabilitation classes

Stroke rehabilitation is designed for stroke survivors. It can help you to regain mobility, improve balance, regain muscle mass, and reduce stress.

You can take part in the class at your own pace, with exercises tailored so you get the best out of them.

Confidence walks

Walking is a great way to stay active following a stroke. If you are concerned about going out for a walk, our confidence walks are a great place to start.

Taking place in our sports halls, you can walk as much or as little or as you like, go at your own pace and stop for a rest at any point. It’s a social and safe way to build your walking confidence.

Strength and balance classes

These evidence-based group sessions are designed to help you improve your mobility, balance, strength, coordination and confidence to get out and about.

Classes are part-seated and part-standing, and are delivered at leisure centres and community venues across the borough.

Home assessments

We offer home assessments for residents who are unable to attend the group strength and balance sessions due to their health or confidence to be active in the community.

We’ll provide you with a personalised programme of exercises to complete in your own time, and support you to improve your mobility, confidence, strength and balance so you can access other suitable activities when you’re ready. We’ll pay you a number of visits over the course of your programme to support your progress and keep you on track.

Wellness walking football

Perfect for lovers of the beautiful game, this session mixes a friendly, gentle, non-competitive game of walking football with exercises that focus on improving mobility, balance, strength and coordination. If you’re wanting to get back into playing sport, this could be the ideal place to start.

Watch Andy’s Story

Stroke survivor Andy Reynolds got back on his feet by playing walking football with Be Well. Watch his emotional story.
