Support with
cancer

A holistic approach to recovery…

Regular physical activity before, during and after cancer treatment is both safe and effective.

Being active before treatment may help you recover more quickly with fewer and/or less severe side effects, while being active during and after treatment may help you maintain your fitness, strength and mental wellbeing.

It can also manage ongoing side effects (e.g. tiredness) and reduce your risk of late effects, while research has shown it can reduce the risk of certain cancers coming back.

Meanwhile, cancer treatment often contributes to low mood and changes in body image, which physical activity can help to negate.

Supporting you on your journey

We work closely with cancer nurse specialists to support patients before, during and after treatment or surgery, and embed evidence-based physical activity into cancer pathways to provide better outcomes for participants.

We also deliver cancer awareness training to members of our leisure team so they are well placed to advise on suitable physical activities, while our ‘Cancer Champions’ can provide additional support where needed.

Cancer rehabilitation

We offer specialist classes at venues across the borough, providing a safe and comfortable environment for you to be more active.

We arrange for health care specialists to drop into our sessions, so they can answer any questions you may have about your treatment and symptoms.

We’ll also give you a taste of our wider activity offer, including Nordic Walking, Walking Netball, Pickleball and other suitable activities.

Breast cancer

We take a holistic approach to support you before, during and after breast cancer surgery.

Working closely with breast cancer nurses and other colleagues at WWL NHS Foundation Trust, we provide support with your rehabilitation exercises and guidance on increasing physical activity post-surgery.

This support will be discussed during your pre-op assessment with the cancer specialist nurses.
