Helping you
manage pain

Effective treatment through movement

When you’re in pain, you may be inclined to avoid physical activity and seek rest. However, if you have a condition such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia or low back pain, exercise therapy can be an important and effective treatment.

Physical activity can reduce the severity of pain, improve physical and psychological function, and positively impact your quality of life.

It can also help strengthen your bones and muscles, boost your mood and mental health, increase your ability to perform daily activities, and prevent falls.

At Be Well, we’re aligned with key clinical teams, including first contact physiotherapists and MSK physiotherapists, to ensure you get appropriate support.

Ways we can help…

Confidence walks

Walking is a great way to stay active and can help manage your pain. However, if you are concerned about going out for a walk, our confidence walks are a great place to start.

Taking place in our sports halls, you can walk as much or as little or as you like, go at your own pace and stop for a rest at any point. It’s a social and safe way to build your walking confidence.

Pain management classes

Our pain management classes rotate weekly through circuit, yoga and core ball stability exercises. They are designed to give variety to your workouts and promote both physical benefits and mindfulness. We also have an entry level Pilates class for those who want to improve balance and flexibility.

ESCAPE-pain

ESCAPE-pain is a six-week, evidence-based group rehabilitation programme for people with chronic joint pain. Delivered over 12 sessions, it combines a progressive exercise circuit with an educational component – with the aim of reducing pain in your joints and increasing mobility and function.

Back care classes

Our back care classes focus on core strength, flexibility and mobility, particularly of the lower back. They include functional exercises that replicate day-to-day activities such as bending and picking up objects.

Water therapy

This pool-based programme includes aqua mobility and walking in water. The water provides resistance while taking pressure off your spine, muscles and joints, allowing you to be more active with less pain.

Healthy weight and nutritional support

There are several risk factors for the development of pain including age, gender, genetic factors, and previous joint injury. The largest modifiable risk factor is obesity, and we offer nutritional support and activities to help you achieve a more healthy weight, which can in turn relieve pressure on your joints and other parts of your body.

If you are aged 18+ and have a Body Mass Index (BMI) score of 25 or above, we can provide a fully-funded 12-week programme of support to help you achieve a more healthy weight and diet – including an initial 1-2-1 consultation followed by group nutritional workshops and a range of activities to choose from.
