Putting power back in your lungs

If you have a lung condition, being active can help you to improve your quality of life; while physical activity can also play an important role in managing your condition.

Regular movement is good for your lungs as it increases the strength of your muscles; both around your lungs themselves, and all over your body.

As you build strength, your muscles need less oxygen to work effectively, which in turn means you’ll breathe more efficiently while moving.

While the fear of getting out of breath may put you off more strenuous activities, making yourself breathless through exercise can actually help improve the symptoms of your lung condition.

Pulmonary rehabilitation

We work with WWL NHS Foundation Trust’s pulmonary team to deliver rehabilitation programmes at Robin Park Leisure Centre and Leigh Leisure Centre.

These eight-week programmes, consisting of two classes per week, include exercises designed specifically for people with long-term lung conditions, as well as advice on managing your condition and looking after your body and lungs, and techniques to manage breathlessness.

Confidence walks

Walking is a great way to get some aerobic activity if you have a lung condition. If you are concerned about going out for a walk, our confidence walks are a great place to start.

Taking place in our sports halls, you can walk as much or as little or as you like, go at your own pace and stop for a rest at any point. It’s a social and safe way to build your walking confidence.
